Tribute to the hippies

The statue honoring The hippies, gifted to Ibiza town by the owner of Pacha, Ricardo Urgell; interprets in three dimensions one of the best known pictures of Toni Riera. One image that has become a symbol of the discotheque Pacha and its Flower Power party.

The icon of the hippy movement on the island, is a bronze work made by Ció Abellí 600 kg and 1,72 m. The picture, entitled ''Father and daughter walking'' was taken in 1972 by Riera, and choosen by Urgell years later to remember and commemorate the origins and hippies' influences in Ibiza.

Over time, the image became more and more popular, even there was entrepreneurs whom offer money to find the protagonists. It was not necessary, because in the XXI century, 38 years later, a woman who was visiting Ibiza for the first time, went to the Flower Power party, recalling those years of the hippy movement. To her amazement she encountered a huge image in front of her, that was her and her father strolling through Vondelpark. Finally the protagonists had names: Sandy Van der Linden and her daughter Radha.

The project has a thin base shaped like a world map with the most representative cities of the hippy movement: San Francisco, Ibiza, Ámsterdam, Katmandú y Goa.

A dutch writer, asked Riera if she can use the image for her new novel, about a father and his child, so he gave her the contact of both of them, in exchange for helping him to join them together to make another picture, this time in Ibiza.

We wish to see this second picture very soon, now in our island, and with a hippy atmosphere a bit... Changed.

What it is certain, is that it will be very exciting to portray this reunion, and to remember once again the history of a movement that marked an entire generation.
